Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DEEP IS MY WELL?

The well depth in Southeastern Wisconsin can vary a lot! There are many shallow wells, some only 40 feet deep around the lakes in the Lake Country area and many 500 foot wells right across the street. Geology is not an exact science which is why the depth of wells in our area varies.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WELLS?

There are three typical well types:

Shallow drilled wells are bored into an unconfined water source, generally found at depths of about 100 feet or less.

Consolidated or “rock” wells are drilled into rock, typically limestone . These wells do not require casing because they collapse. Their average depth is about 250 feet.

Unconsolidated or “sand” wells are drilled into a formation consisting of soil, sand, gravel or clay material that collapses upon itself.

HOW LONG DO WELLS LAST?

The pump that goes inside the well may only last 10-15 years. However, the drilled water well itself may last a lifetime. This is assuming that the well is drilled on property in an abundant area of water. There are other wells that plug up over time and run dry. It is not a common occurrence to have an actual water well dry up and fail but it does happen occasionally.

DOES AUSTIN PLUMBING, HEATING & AIR PULL PERMITS?

We sure do. Because that’s the <right thing to do>.

DO YOU NEED TO BE LICENSED TO WORK ON WELLS IN WISCONSIN?

Yes you do. Water wells create the potential for groundwater contamination, which is why it’s critical that you only rely on a well water professional. The codes that govern the work on, in and round private water wells in Wisconsin is the Department Natural of Resources. Austin Plumbing, Heating & Air is not only a licensed plumbing contractor, but also a licensed well contractor and pump installer in Wisconsin.
